The hand is a frequent symbol throughout my work, as it works as the third position in the triangle of ‘creating’. Alongside of the reproductive binary systems of the womb and phallus, the hand stands between the both, as a non-binary creative force.
The hands in Crystal Radio Geist use the relic of the Hand of Sabazios (1st–2nd century CE ) as a departure point, a reference for the hand inscribed with meaning.
This hand is titled after the term – Viriditas (Latin, literally “greenness,”) is a word meaning vitality, fecundity, lushness, verdure, or growth. It is particularly associated with abbess Hildegard von Bingen, who used it to refer to or symbolise spiritual and physical health, often as a reflection of the Divine Word or as an aspect of the divine nature.
The term fecundity is important here, this a descriptive word for all the work that make –it describes excess in ornament, nature growing out of control. The opposite of banality.
This hand aims to articulate the power of the hand, when it is used ‘without thinking’, when it is trained into such a state that it act in a kind of trance, or dance. This is particularly evident when working with clay.
