This painting is from a photoshoot I did with Gaia and her friend Brandi. I let them pick out what they wanted to wear and we just took photos around the apartment. I loved the gesture so much but as I was painting I realized I wanted to take her out of an identifiable place – to hint more at an internal or psychological space. Her body and the natural undefined backdrop are existing on the same picture plane, but there is a slight separation, which I really like. The title comes from Gertrude Stein’s book, Tender Buttons.
