I became a little obsessed with painting this coat. I was interested in this composition specifically because of the way it concealed her body but maintained a sense of figural form and gesture. The landscape came very spontaneously, a little bit undefined and windy.. I wanted some dynamism and moodiness. The coat functions almost like a blanket, a shelter, hiding place and so the texture is the focus. I recently learned the root for the word glamour comes from the occult and witchcraft, and so the idea of something being glamorous means that it casts a spell or enchants the viewer. I had been thinking about fur coats as an outdated symbol of glamour, and so Spell Blanket (a song by the band Broadcast) seemed like the perfect title.
