Sim Smith is proud to announce Ecstasy, Emily Hunt's second solo exhibition with the gallery, opening Thursday, 1st of May.
Please join us for an artist talk between Emily Hunt and writer Jennifer Higgie on the opening night of the exhibition. Higgie's recent publications include The Other Side: A Journey into Women, Art and the Spirit World (2023) and The Mirror and the Palette: Rebellion, Revolution and Resilience: 500 Years of Women's Self-Portraits (2021). The opening night will start at 18:30 with the conversation at 19:00, followed by a drinks reception. All welcome, RSVP essential.
In this exhibition, Hunt focuses on female artists who practiced magick while remaining deeply devoted to their artistic pursuits. The underlying thread of the exhibition is the search for ecstatic emotional states—whether through spiritual and magical work, dance, intoxication, intense creative experiences, meditation, or sex magic.
This new body of work explores magical partnerships, such as Marjorie Cameron and Jack Parsons, as well as creative solo forces, such as Ithell Colquhoun. At the heart of the exhibition is the dual concept of the artist’s and magician’s Great Work, which specifically describes the moment of union between the self and the divine.
The exhibition will showcase intricate ceramics that have become synonymous with Hunt’s practice, following her recent museum exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. For the first time, this exhibition will also unveil large-scale paintings that Hunt has produced specifically for Ecstasy.
